A utility knife with an alloy body, for the trimming and cutting work that comes up on every job regardless of trade. The metal body is the point of difference: it takes being dropped, stood on and carried loose in a pouch, which a plastic-bodied knife generally does not for long.
It handles opening cartons, scoring and snapping plasterboard, trimming insulation, cutting carpet, underlay, membrane, tape and sheeting, and paring back sealant and excess material. A sharp blade changed often is safer than a blunt one pushed harder, since most knife injuries happen when a dull blade skips off the cut line.
